Help identifying 1858
Help identifying 1858
I have a 1858 I inherited. Serial number under the barrel is 1304. The patent stamp on the top of the barel is mostly rubbed off but I can make out “manufactured by....ilion ny..... riders pt.... aug..1855... may 6 1859” I’m trying to figure out which Remington 1958 it is. Any suggestions?

Re: Help identifying 1858
Hello,
Your revolver is a Remington-Ryder Double Action New Model Belt Revolver. Approximately 3000 to 5000 were manufactured from 1863 to 1873. It was manufactured first in percussion like yours and later in metallic cartridge. Many were also converted from percussion to metallic cartridge and will have conversion numbers.

Re: Help identifying 1858
Here’s a little more info on the Belt Models. They were made from 1863 to 1886, first as percussion models, and starting in 1873, as cartridge models. Remington catalogs called both the SA, and the DA, “Belt Revolvers.” Some modern collectors call the DA pistols, “Rider Model” or “Ryder Belt Models,” because the DA had, “Ryder’s patent,” stamped on the barrels.
An on going survey of the Belt Models shows serials above 10,000. Of 231 reported serials, 57% are DA, while 42% are SA. The DA models were not listed in the 1877 or later Rem catalogs.
What front sight does your gun have, cone or pinched?
Thanks,
Dan
