Remington 1858 New Model
Remington 1858 New Model
I have a 1858 New Model, the date stamped on the top of the barrel is Sept. 14,1858, Serial Number 20972. I'm looking for any information about the unit that may have been issued this revolver.

Re: Remington 1858 New Model
Hi Hutch,
The date is merely a patent date and has nothing to do when it was made. There are a very few records that list where the guns were shipped and even a few that will have the initial unit given the gun. If your gun is a 44, it was made in May, 1863. If your gun is a 36, it was made in March 1863. Either way, it is one of the early New Models
If it was military, there would be a single letter stamped on the major parts when they were inspected. The left grip panel will have a cartouche, 2 or 3 letters in an oval indicating final acceptance. The serial number will also be stamped on the tang of the trigger guard.
