Is Anyone Here Currently Loading 11.7x56R for Hunting??

Post by k3csa »

New Friends,

I've recently bought a M-1867/96 Rolling Block 3-band military musket in 11.7x56mm Rimmed.
(It was originally chambered in 11.7x41mm RIMFIRE, btw & was rechambered/converted to centerfire at the Copehagen National Arsenal in the post 1880 era.)

IF any of you are actually loading this caliber with Black Powder, I would like to know what your favorite HUNTING LOAD is.
(I have a NOS .45-70 HB 405 grain mold that I plan to use to cast bullets for use in the rifle.)

ADDENDA: The standard Danish Army load was a 387 grain cast lead bullet at 1370FPS.

THANKS for reading this comment.
sincerely, k3csa

I have one also. I am pretty sure it had not been in 75 years. So I was working up some loads to make it go bang. I did use 1 1/2 swiss about 55 grs with a 405 gr lead flat point bullet. Biggest thing is to find brass that fits. .45-70 brass is a touch small in diameter and of course to long, you can get some from Buffalo Arms that they make from .348 brass that is ready to go.

This is just guess, but I use to use 34 grs of 3031 with the .405 bullet and it shot well. reduce that to 31 or 32 grs. Another load for .45-70 using 5744 is somewhere between
27.9 and 31.0. Stay to the lower number, still should be safe.

But the safest is to fill with black powder and put a bullet on it and shoot. You will get your best accuracy with the black powder.
