Why 2 different stamps on cylinder?

Post by docent »

I own a 1858 Remington in 44 caliber. On one side of the cylinder - - there is a letter "J" and
on the other side, there is the letter "W"

Does this mean, that my gun/cylinder was inspected by two different inspectors?

Any info would be appreciated.

Yes, I have seen barrels, frames and cylinders with two different letters and sometimes two of the same letters. The inspectors may have been inspecting two different areas of the part or possible the parts were reinspected after the first inspection. Who knows?

Thanks for replying Bill. Have the same with the frame. Right side of the barrel has "W" stamped, and
on the left side there is a "P" stamped.
