Possible 1882 Barrel Insert
Hey all, only my second time to post to the forum here, but I keep returning because this is such a great souce of information on all things Remington.
I recently came into possession of a barrel and have no freaking clue what it was for. I suspected it may be a conversion sleeve to convert a shotgun to a rifle caliber, but it was only a guess. I tried to drop it down the barrel of a break open 12 gauge that I have in my collection, but the shoulder wouldn’t go past the rebate of the chamber that holds the shell from dropping all the way through. Then I noticed the small numbers stamped on one side near the chamber (as seen in one of the pics below), and thought maybe it was for a 10 gauge shotgun. Still had no idea what gun it was for though. The guy we got this barrel from was a big Parker Bros collector, so that was my first guess. Still only a guess. I can’t ask him because we got it from his wife since he died a couple years ago. She was cleaning out his old wood shop and called us first since we bought a few guns from the estate. Anyway, after doing a little research, it looks to possibly be for the Remington 1882. The only markings I’ve found on it are seen in one of the pics below, and it measures 30 1/8” in overall length. After finding very limited info on this thing on the web, I found one pic that resembles what I have, and that person stated that they were made as a conversion from 10 gauge to two different rifle calibers; 38-55 and 45-70 Gov’t. I tried the 45-70 and would not fit. I don’t have a 38-55 cartridge to test, so I resorted to looking up the cartridge dimensions on Wiki, measured the chamber diameter and rim diameter, and the numbers almost confirm this so far. Bore diameter measured at the lands comes to about .393” and measured at the grooves is about .400”. Anyone out there familiar with what I have? Thank you so much in advance!

Re: Possible 1882 Barrel Insert
Mike, You have auxiliary rifle barrel made by Remington. I have two such barrels one in a Model 1882 ten gauge the other 1889 twelve ga. that one is a38-55 the 1882 is stamp 40-2 1/2 if I remember right = 40-70 sharps straight. There are some good pictures in Remington Double shotguns by Charles Semmer. The 10 stamp on your barrel is for10 ga. Jake

Thank you very much for confirming our suspicion! Now that I know what it is, I don't know what the heck I'm going to do with it. Maybe just put it out on the table at gun shows as a conversation starter. Or, buy a shotgun to go along with it! Thanks again. Mike

Re: Possible 1882 Barrel Insert
After seeing that the barrel was possibly a 40-70 Sharps, I measured things again after finding the dimensions on line, there is the possibility that it is not actually a 38-55. Either way, still pretty cool!
