I have one without the factory eyes with a semi-pistol buttstock that and stock are numbered toghter. You can tell the wear on the wood and finish are the same and are definitely factory. There is a send back code on the barrel,so it has been back to the factory. I definitely think the stock has been there from day one. Don't have a clue as to why there weren't any eyes. I have seen several oddities in the 25-R's,such as barrel lenght, buttplate, and a few other weird things.

The illustration in the 1923 catalog is of a carbine with a full magazine, rear rifle style sight, and no sling loops. From what I found, it appears that the earliest ones, when they finally started turning them out, had a 2/3 magazine, rifle style sight rear, and no sling loops. The stock was a straight stock like the one offered on a model 14R with the same shotgun style buttplate. Most found are with sling loops, a carbine sight, and straight stock w/strap steel buttplate. Barrels were lengthened ½" in 1934, as I recall, as some states had stricter rules on the length. 70xx and 79xx have the 14R type of stock, no sling eyes, and the rifle rear sight. Both were made in late 1923 or by mid 1924. The dovetail for the rear sight is about 5.5" forward of the receiver whereas the dovetail of the later carbines, where they used the protected carbine sight, is about 3". I have one with a semi pistol grip stock and crescent(rifle type) buttplate that is a grade "C" and was a special order. Another special order, I believe, is my saddle ring carbine. I only know of one other. I would like to get information on the 25Rs you have for the database I keep on model 25s. You can contact me at hemphill@gvtel.com.............tom
