Inspector on Remington rolling block

Post by cgosse »

My great-great-grandafther was named Henry Erben (1832-1909). He served in the navy from midshipman through rear-admiral, including service in the Civil War.

Various lists of inspectors marks describe "H.E." as belonging to "Henry Erben Cdr., Uns Remington M1867 ,50 Pistol 1867."

I am pretty sure this is him because he was a Lieutenant commander until 1867 or 1868 and then became a Comander after that. Can someone tell me if this was a ceremonial role. Were other Navy officers listed as inspectors?

What does the "Uns" stand for?
