1875 caliber identification

Post by gregorys »

I have a first type blued 1875 revolver s/n 425. It has no caliber markings but since the grips are
a bit different than the standard configuration they may be replacements. Can anyone
help me to determine the correct caliber. The cylinder does fit a 44-40, but since I
do not know the dimensions of the 44 Remington I'm not sure that it wouldn't fit just as well.
The OD at the rear of the cylinder measures .472-.475. The OD at the front measures
.450-.452. The rear of the barrel measures ~.441 while at the muzzle the OD measured from
land to groove is ~.435. The cylinder does not have the shallow counter bore for the
cartride rim that I've seen in some photos. I can send a photo if the above info is not enough.
Thanks in advance for any assistance...
