Chuckster,
Remington did make 2 Rolling Block shotguns. they had external hammers.
The Model 3 & 9 had internal hammers with side cocking levers.
So your's would be one of these.

Model 1893 No. 3 Single Barrel Shotgun
....................
On September 1, 1893, Remington Arms Company introduced an inexpensive, single-barrel shotgun to take the place of their Remington No.1 and No.2 rolling block shotguns. The new gun was a break-open design, activated by a top-lever, and had a cocking lever on the left side of the case-hardened receiver. This Remington Model 1893, No.3 Single-Barrel Shotgun was initially offered in 12 gauge with blued 30", 32" or 34" choke-bored barrel, and cost only $10ºº. The gun was utilitarian in style, with two-piece, non-checkered pistol-grip stock and fore-end. In 1894, 16 and 20 gauges were added, and in 1898, the company added 10, 24 and 28 gauges--making this Remington’s first shotgun to be offered in six different gauges. This proved to be a very popular selling shotgun, as Remington Arms Company produced 86,801 of these guns through 1903.

The most visable difference between the two is that the No.9 does not have the take down plunger in the forearm nose. The forearm is held in place with a screw.

With a total production quantity between the two models of approximately 152,500. The patents applicable to this shotgun are, 528,507 and 528,508, dated October 30, 1884 and issued to R. C. Fay and G. E. Humphreys.

An additional thought.....With barrel markings of E. Remington & Sons, I believe that would predate the Model 3 which should carry the Remington Arms Company marking. Photo's will tell us but it's probably a Rolling Block.
