I recently aquired an 1889 ser#55,5xx. Can anyone tell me the year that ser# was made?
Its a grade 1 with 30" barrels and the patterning numbers are 38 and 42. If I'm reading the other posts correctly thats about improved mod for both barrels.
I miked the ID of the barrels and they are both spot on at .729. the muzzles are .704 and .706 That matches with ImpMod so I dont think anyone has had their hands in there to play with the chokes
Its a beatuiful gun and I want to get it out for a round or two of sporting clays. The barrels are about 90% blue with bright bores. Lockup is very tight so I'm assuming it should be safe for light smokeless loads.
I'd like to get the side plates off and clean the inside but I've never had one of these apart before. Anywhere on the net to get info on disassembly ?
Thanks

In Charles Semmer's book on Remington doubles there is a table of estemated years of production by serial number, but I don't have my copy here with me in Alaska. Hopefully someone with a copy will chime in. As I recall the Model 1889 serial numbers went just over 100,000 around 1900, and that became confusing with Model 1894 serial numbers which began with 100,000, so they jumped to 200,000 for the Model 1889s. So, most of the Model 1889s made in the 20th Century would have serial numbers in the 200,000 range.
It is so very easy to chip the wood around the lockplates, I wouldn't try to go inside unless there was some seriously compelling reason. I'd leave it to the professionals.

Your Remington left the factory in 1893. No other info is available except that. I'm sure you know your barrels on #1 1889 are Remington steel.
