I pulled this from the copy of the owner's guide that Remington sent me for my Model 81:
Complaint: Fails to feed shells from magazine.

Cause:
Magazine spring assembled with wide size toward front of arm.
Remedy:
Assemble spring with wide side of spring toward rear.

Cause:
Top of magazine sides not opened wide enough.
Remedy:
Bend top edges of magazine slightly wider at points about middle of cartridge.

Cause:
Bullet incline in magazine rough or rusted.
Remedy:
Polish incline at front end of magazine very smooth.

Cause:
Side of magazine dented or closed in slightly causing follower to stick.
Remedy:
Adjust sides of magazine to relieve sticking.
Unfortunately that's about all Remington had to offer. Good luck puzzling the thing out. Please keep us posted on any success.
