I'm confused on the 244. I wonder if there was some sort of recall or service bulletin in 1954 - 1955? I am not too far from Ilion so it would have been easy for the original buyer or shop to deliver back to the factory. Great thread, outstanding info. Thanks, Peter.

What's your confusion? According to the following link, the .244 Rem. came out in 1956 (although I've seen 1955 in other sources). I have one from about that year ('56), but mine has a 26" barrel (which isn't listed in the link).

The confusion is that by the conversion chart it appears that my 244 has a repair code DA3 that pre-dates the manufacture date of the rifle OB 8! The 3 indicates they went to the factory but perhaps the A in the repair code is from the alpha series referring to 1980 or 2006. Perhaps it must be. Do they still stamp repairs the same way? I don't have an answer for your repair code question, but after I got home, I checked the date code in my list and it's ALSO O B 8. The serial number on it is: 3674XX

The Lacy book says:
If a rifle is rebarreled at the factory, it should have a date code followed by a "3" which is the numerical code for a factory repair.

So possibly we can assume "3" indicates other repairs as well.

Food for thought...I sent both those rifles back to Remington for their trigger service update and one for an accuracy check. At the time I only recorded the rifles serial number and was not overly interested in the date codes. I am now wondering if they stamped the barrels indicating the factory service work. My recollection was that I had this work done in mid to late 2005. Peter.

Rem 725, I have 5 721 and 722's I would like to share the date codes on:

721, 300 H&H, ser# 239997, code X YY = December 1952
721, 30-06, ser# 409718, code O D = July 1957, X D = December 1957, B E = January 1958. Evidently went back to the factory twice in 1957, but was fixed and has excellent accuracy now.
721, 30-06, ser# 264739, code X YY = December 1952
722, 300 Savage, ser# 97832, code R UU = November 1949
722, 222 Rem, ser# 94088, code E UU = October 1949, I would be interested if anyone has a 222 with a lower serial number. This caliber was introduced in March of 1950, so this gun was on the assembly line the year before. It is all original and well used with original K6.

or a 22" screw on rear sight?

Rem 725, yes the ser# 409XXX has a 24 inch barrel and a raise rear sight notch on the barrel. The latter two repair dates appear to have an 8 behind the codes or a similar figure. I am not sure what this 8 signifies? The original code has a 12 behind it. The barrel location diagram shows this to be an assembly number. I need to study the numbers you have. Maybe I can answer my own question on the .222. Hope this helps you. Thanks a lot.

Rem 725,
I have another addition that I want to share. Model 721 transition model 30-06, barrel code D F, September 1959, ser# 424366, screw on rear sight, brass bead on front ramp. 22 inch barrel. Please add it to your list. Someone has added a Pachmayr whiteline pad.

270 Win caliber date code XB, December 1955 ser# 371997
300 H&H caliber date code KXX, May 1951 ser# 173894

The 270 is interesting in that the barrel was never stamped with the cartridge at the factory. I've had a couple gunsmith's look at it and they agree that the barrel has never been polished and reblued. I have since rebarreled the rifle but have the original barrel here.

I don't have these two anymore and although I didn't record the date codes I remember one was 1954 and the other 1955.

Can anyone tell me how many 300 H&H 721's were built in each year?

I bought a 722 the other day in 222 remington, it is serial number 32008x. I have just had a little time to play with it. I took off the little cheap scope that was on it and put a 4 to 12 on it so that I could see how it might group.

The first 2 - 5 shot groups with the only factory ammo I could find, shot just under an inch at 100 yds.

As far as I can tell it is all original. Plain jane stock. Someone has glass bedded it. I was going to cut it into a 22-250 but I may buy some dies and see what a little load tailoring can do to make it shoot it's best as it is. Any suggestions where to start?

I am trying to understand the date codes described earlier. It looks like they blew off the codes on this rifle and just stamped the year 1951. Is that correct?
