Proud owner of several pre 1948 Remington autoloaders. Retired, so I get to shoot skeet with them a couple times a week.
Researching my oldest 20 ga Sportsman using this site and have questions about things that are not lining up

5 digit Serial/ 119xx, matching on barrel and trigger casting

Barrel date code is Jan of 1933 (B B)

serial number in range of pre 1936 according to what I've seen

"The Sportsman" roll engraved top left side of receiver No stamp on bolt

Only 1 pheasant and 1 duck on roll engraving. Not supposed to be that way until 1937 ?

Barrel is marked SKEET, and has a vent rib, no idea if rib is factory or aftermarket. I don't find any name on rib. Pretty sure gun was reblued at some time

When I got it there was a Cutts type compensator with the interchangeable choke extensions .
The comp was installed by threading the barrel. . The barrel threads were not good so I had a friend cut off the comp and threads
There is no brand name on the comp, but the threads for the chokes are not the same as another Sportsman 20 ga I have, it's comp is labeled "CUTTS" and LYMAN"

Any chance this would be a factory installed comp?

Just curious if I can learn anymore about my old junk.

My 12-gauge The Sportsman has a 1936 Sportsman serial number and a barrel date code PE P = June E = 1936 and is just as you describe The Sportsman on the left side of the receiver and the one-bird roll-stamping.

From the pictures of 20-gauge The Sportsman I've saved, 9869 has the 3-bird roll-stamping and 11899 has 1-bird. "The Sportsman" moves to the bolt with the change from separate The Sportsman serial numbers to the Model 11 serial numbers which was for 20-gauges the best I can read the old ledger page February 4, 1938.

Thanks researcher, would the 119xx serial be consistent with 1933?

On another note, any ideas on who made the comp? I have what I believe is a spreader and 2 full or extra full choke extensions, one has 2 dots, the other appears to have had a stamp that was polished away but is not readable. The spreader(?) has no discernable marks. Tried to attach some photos, but tech challenged. Thanks again.

There were a lot of choke devices marketed from the 1930s into the 60s. The most often seen "comp" types were of course the Cutts Compensator --
