Re: MODEL 12CF
I think he said his 3 is by the barrel code DR3. The picture of the three is a gun in my collection. I always wondered why they stamped a 3 there. You have any guesses John. The gun pictured is a early steel magazine rifle. Do you think that it stands for a NO.3 model 12. I belive his barrel is newer then the reciever as well. At least it didnt leave the factory with that barrel when it was a new gun. I think when it was sent in they just chose a 12-C barrel that was on the rack and already stamped in 1924. This is what makes Remingtons so exciting to collect. Let me know what you think on my 3 John. Im curious.
Re: MODEL 12CF
I checked my early steel tubed 12s; As, Bs, & Cs. None have a stamp where yours is. My serial #26 Gallery Special does have a "2" stamped on the inside of the receiver. That would be proper for a No. 2 grade before Rem called them "Bs". I have two three digit As. Neither are marked with a number (other than the upside down serial number) on the inside. My earliest "C" was made in 1910. It also does not have a model # on the inside. So maybe they only stamped "Bs" on the inside???

Re: MODEL 12CF
I would still like to see some photos. If you get a chance post some.
Re: MODEL 12CF
THE BARREL MARKINGS END WITH "1912". THE ONLY 3 ON THE RIFLE IS THE "DR3" AND FROM WHAT I HAVE COME UP WITH THAT 3 STANDS FOR AN ASSEMBLY NUMBER. THE NUMBER ON THE RECIEVER FACE IS A 5. IT ALMOST LOOKS LIKE THE "F" IN THE
"MODEL 12 C. F." WAS STAMPED AT A DIFFERENT TIME AS IT APPEARS TO MAYBE BE A LITTLE DEEPER IN THE BARREL THAN THE "MODEL 12 C." PART. JUST A MAYBE.
I'M THINKING THIS WAS ORIGINALLY A MODEL 12 F MADE IN 1913 AND SOMEONE SENT IT BACK TO THE FACTORY AFTER 1923 FOR A BARREL REPLACEMENT AND REMINGTON REPLACED THE BARREL FROM A MODEL C. THEY THEN STAMPED AN F. AFTER THE C SINCE IT WAS GOING ON AN F RIFLE. SO THE RIFLE WAS MADE IN 1913 AND THE BARREL WAS MADE IN 1924. DOES THIS MAKE ANY SENSE? I WONDER WHAT THE 5 MEANS? MAYBE IT REPRESENTS THE PERSON WHO REPLACED THE BARREL? I.B.

Re: MODEL 12CF
The DR3 meens your gun was repaired Sept. 1924. The 5 meens it was a employee sale. That meens your gun was ordered and purchased originally from a Remington employee. I believe your gun left the factory in 1913 a Model 12-F. In 1924 the gun was sent back to Remington to be repaired. The repair called for the old barrel to be replaced with a new one. I believe they pulled a 12-C barrel of the shelf that was already stamped 12-C. They engraved the new barrel to the F-grade specs then stamped 12-CF on the barrel. If they would have pulled a blank barrel of the shelf I believe they never would have stamped 12-CF on it.

HEY REMINGTON600,
I THINK YOU FIGURED IT OUT. WOW, WHAT A STORY. WHAT HISTORY. YOU GUYS REALLY KNOW YOUR STUFF. I JUST HAD A FRIEND'S DAD LOOK AT THIS GUN WHO OWNS A LOT OF OLD SHOTGUNS. HE SAYS HE DOESN'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT RIFLES BUT MADE THE FOLLOWING OBSERVATIONS. NONE OF THE WOOD OR BUTT PLATE IS ORIGINAL. HOWEVER, HE SAID THE CHECKERING ON BOTH PIECES OF WOOD WERE REALLY NICE AND SO WAS THE WOOD. APPEARED TO HAVE BEEN DONE RECENTLY. HE SUGGESTED THAT I MIGHT TRY AND FIND AN OLD ORIGINAL BUTT PLATE.
DOES THAT SOUND LIKE A GOOD IDEA?
ARE THESE AVAILABLE ANYWHERE?
HE ALSO SAID THE ENGRAVING WAS SOME OF THE BEST HE HAD EVER SEEN AS FAR AS OLD SHOTGUNS WENT. HE PUT THE CONDITION OF THE RECEIVER AND BARREL AT A 7 OUT OF 10. 10 BEING THE BEST. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT A ROUGH ESTIMATE OF VALUE WOULD BE ON THIS THING OR WHERE I COULD FIND OUT? I HAVE NO IDEA. I.B.

Re: MODEL 12CF
Don't recently? You mean refinished or he thinks someone made a new (identical to original) stock and a original butt plate will fit?
This is just screaming to be seen photo's are a must. I assume by the name idahobart your in Idaho, to far for me to see it
In my opinion there's far to many questions which need ATLEAST photo's if not gun and hand and possibly disassembly to answer to give any value estimates any of these questions raised could significantly change the value one way or the other....
I believe there are some VERY knowledgeable 12 collectors here certainly IS a good place to find out but this is like guessing what's behind box number 2.

Re: MODEL 12CF
Why does he think the wood is not original? An F-grade you should have checkered forend and pistol grip. Do you have a pistol grip stock? or is it a straight stock? Are you able to post pictures. If you can you can email them to me if you can not figure how to post on the forum. Then I can try to post them for you. I would really like to see photos sounds interesting. remington600@att.net.
Re: MODEL 12CF
HE SAID REPLACED. AS I LOOK AT THE WOOD IT LOOKS NEW COMPARED TO THE REST OF THE GUN. NO DINGS, SCRATCHES ETC. I THINK THE STOCK IS A PISTOL GRIP.
