Rem Model 11 : Date Help, Please
Re: Rem Model 11 : Date Help, Please
Very interesting ! Thanks for the reply. It WOULD explain why the very old barrel on it when I bought the gun did not seem to be original (finish did not match the receiver's) ...

Re: Rem Model 11 : Date Help, Please
I find no indication that Remington shipped unmarked guns. The lunch box theory is a good one and they would sometimes ship unmarked to an engraver in the white. Jay
Re: Rem Model 11 : Date Help, Please
I, also have a model 11 shotgun. it was my greatgrandfathers. my dad found it in my uncles garage, years ago. I love it. ive killed many deer, rabbits, squirrels and pheasant with it. he just finally gave it to me. Im very happy about it. I also have a ithaca 37 and a double barrel, but the model 11 is my favorite. Mine, also doesnt have any markings on receiver other than the serial# on the bottom in front of the loading gate. this gun was never refinished. when found,as now it doesnt have blueing left on it. It has a gray patena metal look. Ive had this gun out in the pouring rain at times and though i try my best to clean it afterwards, when i was younger this didnt always happen. the gun has never had a spot of rust on it. its the best...hope this helps

Thanks, tbone; that is good to know. I really appreciate it.

Re: Rem Model 11 : Date Help, Please
Here I thought I had a unique question. I was directed to this site and find several threads addressing my question.
I have a similar shotgun, actually belongs to a friend as it was his grandfather's gun. He sent it with me to see if I could find anything out about it.
It's obviously a Remington model 11 predecessor the "Autoloading Gun", but it has absolutely no markings on the receiver other than the serial number, 47xxx, on the bottom where it's loaded.
The barrel is marked "Manufactured by the Remington Arms Company. Ilion, N.Y. U.S.A. Browning's patents OCT.8,1900.DEC.17/01.SEPT.20.02.JUNE18.03." I may have some of the numbers wrong because they're hard to read.
The only other markings on the barrel are the serial number (same as receiver), "A1" on the bottom under the chamber, and "FULL" is stamped on the left side of the barrel. It is 12 gauge, but there is absolutely no markings indicating such.
From reading the several threads about these unmarked receivers, it appears they are at least somewhat common. I'm guessing this thing is right around 100 years old.

Re: Rem Model 11 : Date Help, Please
I certainly never expected to find that mine had been made in 1910 ...

Re: Rem Model 11 : Date Help, Please
I learn some thing from this site every time I participate in answering questions. It is now apparent that the early model 11's had no markings on the receiver other than the serial number. I don't know however when they started to mark the receivers. Apparently it was after they converted to the Model 11 from the original Auto Loader of 1905
Re: Rem Model 11 : Date Help, Please
I just picked up a Model 11 just like that one, only in obviously original condition metal. It has absolutely no markings on the receiver except for the serial number on the bottom by the feed. The barrel is marked Remington, but also lists the Browning patent dates. The wood is very plain, has been re-shellacked at some point, and feels very light, almost to the point I am afraid of breaking it. It has no checkering or anything.
Edit to add: The serial number is lower by quite a bit than Cold Steel Man's.

New development!
Holy thread resurrection, Batman!!!
I made a very intersting discovery at a recent gunshow and was quite shocked. It would appear that the furniture on my shotgun is indeed NOT a custom job by a private gunsmith, but rather a custom Remington factory stock and forearm. I happened by a table which displayed a cased Remington custom rifle which had EXACTLY the same amber-colored birds-eye maple stock as seen on my shotgun (cf. the pics in my initial post). JUST EXACTLY tha same color and pattern. I asked the table owner if it was an after-market add-on and he stated that it was NOT and that it was all original from Remington.
Any thoughts, Jay (or anybody) ?

Remington autoloading Shotgun Custom Stock
* crickets chirping *
Surely I am not the only one to have seen another stock like this out of the Remington custom shop ...

Re: Rem Model 11 : Date Help, Please
CSM,
I am sorry but I haven't seen anything similar to it that has been attributed to the custom shop or one of the higher grade firearms.
Unfortunately, Mr. Huber has passed away and with his passing alot of very valuable knowledge has left with him.

His passing is a great misfortune to us all and it is with great regret that I read your message. Even if his passing is some time ago, I will remember his family in my prayers.
There is a gun show here this weekend: perhaps the same vendor will again be present with this rifle and give me the opportunity to ask him further concerning it.
Thank you for your response.

Update:
I was able to find the correct vendor at the gun show, though he had not brought the gun with him. I will be going to his home in a few weeks to take some pictures of the stock for comparison purposes. According to his memory, the stock in question was on a cased Remington 3200 shotgun, not a rifle. I believe that to be correct.

Re: Rem Model 11 : Date Help, Please
From what I know about 3200's, I would not get out your wallet if the gun show man offers to sell you a bridge
Re: Rem Model 11 : Date Help, Please
Not a problem; I am not a shotgunner and he knows that I am not interested in buying, just taking the pics. He was himself curious about my 1910 shotgun.
He does have a rather nice M1917 and an excellent Krag I intend to talk with him about , though ...
