I just picked up a Remington Model 10 (riot) at a gun show at a pretty decent price. The seller had no idea what he had and to be honest neither did I until I started doing my homework. I liked the character of it and I couldn't pass it up. I know the gun I have was made in 1923 after talking to the folks at Remington but that's about it. I know a bit about the history of the various models and such but what I am looking for is a way to track down more specific information about the actual gun I have, not just the model.
Is there a way to track batches of serial numbers to get some general idea of where a gun may have been shipped to from the factory? If it's a riot gun it may have been shipped to a police department or something of the like. The serial number is 212975 (later production). Any help anyone can provide in tracking down somemore information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all and happy shooting!

Re: Model 10 Riot
According to the old factory ledger, your gun would have been made during January 1922 --

In the 1918-19 Remington Arms -- Union Metallic Cartridge Co. catalogue the No. 10R "Riot" Grade had a list price of $42. In 1920 the company name was changed to Remington Arms Co., Inc. The 1923 Remington Arms Co., Inc. Catalogue No. 107 still shows the gun, but doesn't have prices listed in it.
The gun was designed by Remington's prolific designer John D. Pederson and was introduced in the 1908-09 Remington Arms Co. catalogue as the Remington Repeating Shotgun and in the 1909 catalogue it was also refered to as the Model 1908. In the 1910 catalogue it is just the Remington Repeating Shotgun again?!? In 1911 Remington and UMC were combined as Remington Arms -- Union Metallic Cartridge Co. and shortly thereafter they began calling it the Model No. 10.

Re: Model 10 Riot
Thanks for the info! That handwritten ledger is something else. But I don't suppose buried somewhere in the vast depths of the Remington archives there would be shipping records or receipts for batches of these? My other question is this: Was the riot version something typically sold to anyone who wanted one or was it something that was generally produced for law enforcement? I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to track whether my gun specifically was a "farm gun" so to speak or belonged to a police department or something of the like. I'm guessing that the records I have seen are probably as good as it gets but I thought it was worth the shot in the dark (pardon the pun). Thank you for all the help and information thus far!
