Mystery Model 700. Can you help me?

Post by TwoWheelFiend »

Hi guys, I joined this board in hopes of finding the answer to a question that has been bugging me for a while. Maybe you guys can help.

I bought a Remington 700 from* a gunstore about 8 years ago. Tere are no markings on the barrel what-so-ever, and is chambered for a .223 or so I am told. The receiver has the serial no. 6342589 . It has a strange flat allmost grey finish on it. It has a 6 round internal mag with a release on the bottom. I was told when i bought it that it was used in Vietnam as a sniper rifle. I have never heard of snipers using 700's in Vietnam, but I guess it is more than possable. Anyone here have any information that could help me find out? The gun is great, I put a Simmons whitetail classic 4-12X44 scope on and it will shoots 1/4" groups at 100yds with good handloads in it.

Thanks guys!

If you've been shooting it with .223 ammo, it sounds like it IS a .223.
I would suggest doing a Google search on something like "Vietnam sniper rifles" and start reading through the results.
I did a brief search and came up with quite a few links, but couldn't find any reference to any Remington rifles being used in THAT caliber. The Remington rifle used was the the M-40 and the most-used caliber was the 7.62×51 mm NATO. Since they were "sniper" rifles, they needed a somewhat larger caliber to "reach out and touch someone". ;)

As near as I could determine, the serial number you listed would probably put it "in the vicinity of" 1970. I have a 1968 vintage 700 with a six-digit serial number 358XXX and a 1971 vintage 700 with a 7-digit serial number 6458XXX, so, I'd suspect yours is slightly before 1971.

I'd say......shoot it and enjoy it.
