I'm not experienced with guns, but I have several friends who are. I recently took custody of my father in law's collection (he died about 10 years ago). In the collection is a Remington double barrel shotgun. I assume from the serial number (216xxx) that it must be a model 1899. This gun has been looked over by several folks who 'know guns' although they don't necessarily know antique Remingtons - and they've told me it looks good to shoot - I will seek out a knowledgable gunsmith in the area. I would like to know - if we shoot this gun, what kind of ammo do we need? I have one friend who has been reloading for 40+ years and has a shotgun press if we need to make custom - if we need paper shells, then I need a source. I'm perfectly willing to provide photos or additional information.
thanks for the help.

Help on 1889 12 ga.
Re: Help on 1889 12 ga.
Ray you are right it is an 1889 gun. Does it have Damascus barrels or steel barrel? It probably has 2 5/8" shell chambers? Taking it to a gunsmith is a good idea and he can answer my Questions. What is the condition of the bores? Based on what he tells you i can recommend some ammo. Jay Huber RSA huber7774@bellsouth.net
Re: Help on 1889 12 ga.
Barrels are not damascus. I have the name of a gunsmith - will check with him in the coming week. Barrels appear in excellent condition.
Re: Help on 1889 12 ga.
I have attempted to contact the most knowledgeable gunsmith in town. He is out of town for two weeks having a medical procedure which will take him out of action for a month or two. I have ascertained: barrels are not Damascus; the gun will chamber a 2-3/4" shell. Any further advice on how to proceed is gratefully received. As nearly as I can measure the space from the bottom of the shell case to the start of the forcing cone seems to measure about 2-3/4" and the forcing cone seems to be about 5/16" long. I judged this by inserting a squared off popsicle stick into the chamber while viewing where the cone starts and ends - marking it in the chamber then removing to measure.
Re: Help on 1889 12 ga.
I use Low Brass 1 oz shot 2 3/4" I have actually started using B&P F2 SUB SOUND 2 5/8" , 12ga, !oz shot in all my guns even Damascus in fine condition. It always fits and has low recoil. Again if you use these I take no responsibility for recommending in that I have not inspected the Gun, shoot at your own risk. Jay
Re: Help on 1889 12 ga.
Thanks Jay. I'm attempting, at this point, to ascertain whether it is really chambered for 2-5/8" - which seems likely. I have ordered a chamber gauge from Brownells - will see what that says before I do anything. I'm looking at the possibility of handloading - and trimming to 2-5/8" if that seems like the proper length. I have a good friend who has been reloading everything he has for over 40 years.
