Model 8 and 81 Caliber Designations

Post by RBall »

My brother collects Model 8 and Model 81 Remington Rifles, but has so far avoided using a computer. He asked me to make a few inquires here for him.

It his understanding that the Model 8 was produced in .25 Rem, .30 Rem, .32 Rem and .35 Rem. The Model 81 in the three larger of these calibers. If I understand him correctly he either has or has examined all seven of these variations.

Apparently he recently purchased a Model 8 marked "30/30R" and an 81 marked "25/35R". He has several questions:

Is a 30/30R the same as 30 Rem? Is 25/35R the same as 25 Rem? If not what are they?

Is the Model 81 known to have been produced in 25 Rem(or 25/35R)?

I looked in my Cartridges of the World book and could not find reference to the 30/30R or 25/30R.

Thanks for any help.

There were some early Model 8s that were marked 30-30 Remington, and Remington did sell ammunition (along with others) marked 30-30 Remington. This ammunition is 30 Remington. It is confusing to most but remember the 30 Remington is rimless. As far as I know the 25-35 marking is unknown to me as anything other than the 25-35 Win. I have had ammo marked 30-30 Remington that was 30 Remington. You will also find 81 rifles in 300 Savage. I don't know if the Model 8 was chambered in that caliber. Check the book section on the home page of this site for an excellant book about the Model 8 and 81. Good luck on obtaining more information. Your brother is missing out on a valuable resource by not using the computer. The book would answer most of his questions.

I just went back and reread Tbury's remarks. Looks like most of my remarks were already made. Thanks TB

Thanks very much to all who replied to my inquiry. I will print them all (including the excellent photo) and snail mail to my brother.

The short production period explains why I did not find the 30/30 Rem and 25/35 Rem in the Cartridges of the World.
