Help with Remington 7400 magazines

Post by valen1972 »

I purchased a 1988 built 7400 30-06. With the original mag it cycles flawlessly (mag marked only 30-06) with any Remington branded multi-caliber mags I have picked up it FTF's almost every round. It gets hung up stripping the round from the mag. I can push gently on the charging handle and it will finish stripping the round. According to my exchange with Remington below and what I saw on another forum it seems to be a feed lip issue. I really do not want to have a gunsmith modify every mag I buy. Does anyone have experince in doing it themselves or does anyone know or have any older single calibre mags for sale? Thanks in advance!

Dear Valen1972,

Valen1972 you can get the older magazines through Numerich at 866-686-7424.
All the adjustment to the new magazine entails is a simple adjustment to the
feed lips simple really, so it will work better in the older firearms. These
magazines as you have stated in your previous email are no longer made
caliber specific.

Thanks

Thank you for your fast response, is it possible to purchase the older style
magazines? Gander mountain wants to charge an as yet unknown amount to look
at it, whether they can fix it or not. I think this is more of a remington
problem. Thanks in advance!

Dear Valen1972,

Thank you for visiting Remington Country! We certainly appreciate you taking
the time to write in with your question.

Valen1972 you are correct the newer magazine's are slightly different and may
require some slight modification to actually function correctly in the older
model 7400's sir. Have the gunsmith at Gander sir take a look at the new
magazine fit it may just require a slight adjustment to get to work
properly.

I purchased a used 7400 30-06 built in 1988. When I use the original
magazine it cycles flawlessly, I have no FTF's or other issues. When I
purchased a second magazine, Remington brand, it Fails To Feed every round,
it seems the round somehow locks in the magazine. The rounds I have used are
Remington 180gr Core-Lokt. I can tap the charging handle and it will
complete stripping the round from the magazine. I have tried several
Remington magazines all purchased from Gander Mountain and ALL FTF. Is there
something with the magazine rifle combination here? The only difference I
can really see is that the original mag is stamped 30-06 where as the new
mags are multi-caliber magazines. Is there a known issue here? If not what
do you suggest as it works flawlessly with the original mag. Thanks
in advance!

What I found in another forum:

The jams I've seen in Remington autos have been completely different than those described by ****. The only jams I've observed are failure to feed from magazine on 1 side of the magazine but not the other. This feed jam is caused by magazine lip being too open allowing the round to strip from magazine at too steep of an angle causing it to jam. Bending inward on magazine lip until rounds feed at correct angle fixes this problem. However, I keep all my guns clean whether auto or not which may explain why I've not seen the problem **** describes.

The box magazine that you described is not that hard to modify.

The word box should describe how the magazine is assembled.

You can squeeze the magazine on it's sides, in a vise - with soft jaws - I use two pieces of plywood - cut to fit between the jaws of the vise to hold my work.

If the clip is a loose fit, you can tighten it by spreading the clip in the vise.

You need to have a set of digital calipers to measure the exact measurement of the origional clip - to compare it to the aftermarket clip.

Some of the newer style Remington clips - with the plastic on the bottom is not the best option. I would hunt for the older style clips.

I would also remember that your gun was not designed to be a machine gun . It is a hunting - sporting arm - and was not designed for rapid fire.

If I had a nickel for every person that I have had to say that to - I would be a rich man.

Hint - Hint

Take it to a gunsmith!

I do not consider Gander Mountain - to be a authorized Remington Repair service center.

Sounds like the problem my "new" model 74 gave me. I fired 12 rounds through it last week and on numbers 10 and 11 I had to push the bolt about a 1/4" to close it. The magazine is loose too. I can move it up and down about 1/8". I'm going to try Riflemans solution and see if that works, otherwise I'll buy a new Remington made magazine. Other than the bolt not closing on two rounds the rifle is pretty nice and easy shooting for a 30/06.
