1879 Lifter Grade?

Post by Gordon Green »

Hello,
Below are pics of my 10 ga. 1879 Lifter Gun. It has 30" Damascus barrels, pistol grip stock and weighs 8.5 lbs. I would appreciate your thoughts as to what grade gun this is. This gun is plain, with no engraving but has Damascus barrels and the grip and forend are checkered. In Charles Semmers book, he indicates the Grade 1 has Decarbonized barrels, and you don't see Damascus until grade 4. This gun is clearly does not have the engraving of a grade 4. A grade 2 gun has checkered grip and forend, but has Twist barrels. The grade 3 has the checkering and engraving but has Laminated barrels. This gun also has a pistol grip stock, which was a $5.00 extra.
I realize that this a grey area, but would love to hear some thoughts from those with more experience than I have.
thanks,
Gordon

Remington would suppply Steel barrels of damascus on any grade if ordered. Your gun is obviously a special order. Jay Huber RSA

Thanks Jay,
I boought it some years ago at a gun show and have enjoyed it ever since. I recently bought some Black Powder/Bismuth shells to shoot out of a Syracuse LC Smith Quality 2 at ducks this fall. I may try the Remington as well.
