A coincidence side note happened last night at our Historical Arms Collectors dinner meeting. A friend brought in a Springfield Navy Rolling Block is excellent condition for show and tell! As he passed it around the group I cocked the hammer and noticed half cock is only about 1/4 cock. I then opened it to full cock, and opened and closed the breech block and it stayed in full cock, so no safety on it at all. Just like a Remington made version.

The 1870 Navy version had no safety, while the later, 1871 Army version (and the NY State Militia model) did!
As an aside . . .both my RBs have excellent bores and truly are a “hoot-to-shoot!”
My RB collector friend is still out of town, but he sent a mssg a couple of days ago and said the same, that the NJ and the Springfield were the only RBs that he knew of that had the safety. but he didn't know if they had the same design, or if the Rem made RBs had a different safety. He should be back home later today, but I won't bug him right away. I'll let them settle in from their trip and bug him tomorrow! ; )

PS The RB pistol Book mentions that the 1901 Army target model had a safety, but didn't go into detail there. I''ll have to read more, when I get the chance.
