Hi Guys and Gals, just joined from the Sunny Coast in Queensland, Australia.
Picked up a Remington Model 14 1/2 in 44mag from my dealer which was stuck open and would not close. Took it home took the butt off and tapped the bolt with an armourers mallet and it worked, for about 3 seconds. Took it apart, cleaned the race way etc. struggled putting the bolt back in, until I found a post on here with the original manual, thanks ForumAdmin! The original problem still occurs though and I was wondering if it is due to the missing dog carrier spring. Thoughts?
Also, I watched a Canadian youtuber who made a disassembly and assembly video, which was helpful, in it when putting the bolt back into the action the slide looks like it is spring assisted, is this what a model 14 1/2 is supposed to do? Mine does not.
Thanks in advance, I did try searching for more info but the bloody search engine kept saying my search words were too common.
Remington 14 1.2 dog carrier spring Missing
Re: Remington 14 1.2 dog carrier spring Missing
Hey!
Two items of note, this rifle was made in 44-40/44 Remington which are the same cartridge, not .44 Magnum unless someone did some serious modifications. That rifle and the steel used was never designed for something that stout.
Secondly, yes the carrier dog spring is key to activating the "carrier dog", if the spring is missing the carrier (cartridge lifter) won't work and your rifle won't feed. There is a chap here in the U.S. that makes/sells new carrier dog springs and sells them on Ebay for like $23 (U.S.), would think this is a part he could mail you without worrying about customs??
They work, I've used them in several repairs! The "action bar cover" and "carrier dog spring" are the two most broken parts on these rifles.
Best regards!
