1864 Cartridge Converted military issued NMA

Post by Artyldr01 »

Hello,

I could use some help. I have a Remington New Model Army, 44 Caliber, U.S. issued with good grip cartouche, multiple different single letter marks on the frame, trigger guard, and barrel, and bottom of the grips.

The serial number, 79425, places it in 1864 and in the range of likely use with the 6th Michigan Volunteer Cavalry (though no guarantee of course), a very interesting history to that unit.

SN: 79425 On barrel bottom and left grip frame

Strong military grip cartouche I believe to be "BH" for Benjamin Hannis.

"D" on the bottom of each grip.
"H" Left side frame by shield
"C" on frame in front of cylinder
"D" left sode of barrely by frame
"C" left side lever
"S" bottom of barrel near lever catch
"D" bottom front of trigger guard
"P" upside down on right barrel and frame

164 on front of cylinder
164 on left side of grip frame indicating the conversion number

Converted to Cartridege, not by the factory as it is a six shot, not a five shot. I don't believe it is the original cylinder as it has three digits that are not part of the serial number. The hammer has been buggered up a bit and actually snapped off but isprobably from the era.

The serial number, 79425, places it in the range of likely issued to the 6th Michigan Volunteer Cavalry (though no guarantee of course), a very interesting history to that unit.

The obvious issue is the modified hammer, which is on the very of snapping off. It is a little lose but locks up fairly nicely for a gun made in 1864.

I have Donald L. Ware's book and McDowell's Conversion book and am studying them diligently. That said, the Civil War and frontier era is not my strength so any help determining the "story" on this is appreciated.

Thank you!

If you are interested in Remington NMA conversiona you need to get a copy of "Remington Large-Bore Conversion Revolvers" by Roger Phillips. Unfortunately only 250 copies were printed and they are a little pricy.

HI,

How is the new face of the recoil shield attached, is it welded?

I think welded. I'm not 100% sure though.

I think welded but I'm not sure. I do see a crack.
