Rem. 341 P stock been replaced with ?

Post by WillyBillMT »

Some years ago I inherited a Rem. 341 P .22 It is fitted with a Weaver D4 scope. I have not found a serial number, I believe they are supposed to be on left side barrel near receiver. I've noticed the stock seems to be from a different rifle as one can see where it has been filled in the left side of the receiver area. While reading and viewing info on line I saw the stock seems to have the right shape but is checkered, (Fore stock fully). All the examples I could find a photo of were not checkered. Am curious as to thoughts any of you may have. Also, I know these were made for only a few years, and so don't want to refinish the stock and touch up bluing if it is at all rare or collectable. Any input will be greatly appreciated.

I think the stock is original but has been checkered after it left the factory, it also appears to be refinished.

The forward two notches that have been filled are probably from a side-mount scope base. If you look inside/outside the receiver at this location you may see tapped holes for the mount screws. The rearmost notch would be for a receiver sight, the holes are visible in this case.

Thanks, Mainspring. I did figure more details by reading many posts here and on Rimfire forum. Found the serial # under the stock. It was built in June of 1936, 30,0XX so is an early one. It was my grandfathers rifle, given to me by a cousin when they retired and moved south some years ago. Likely checkered by an uncle. Was glad I could refurbish it in good conscience as it was already modified and refinished. The barrel /rifling are in excellent condition. The safety has been somehow altered to where it is on fire when in upright position under the scope. Flips off to the right instead of left. I put many hours into restoring it, and am very pleased with the results. Meticulously cleaned the action, stripped the stock, steamed out the dents and refinished it. Also re-blued. Found a reproduction buttplate and decided it was looking like a small version of a big game gun so decided to give it some bling. I made a spacer out of a piece of white paneling like they use in semi trailers and kitchens. Am looking forward to doing a lot of shooting with it this summer. It looks good from where I sit! I think it's neat that the same rifle has passed down thru the family and each generation maintains and improves the rifle and it's aesthetics.
