1858 New Model Police
1858 New Model Police
I picked up this piece earlier this week. Obviously, it's seen better days. I have not cleaned the handgun. It is as I received it. It's non-converted, hammer not locking back, and It has a missing loading lever catch at the bottom of the .36 cal 4.5" barrel below the front sight. I suspect it has a main or hand spring issue. It has the inscription of "American Express Co No. 45" on the frame above the cylinder. Serial numbers match on frame and under the barrel. Is this a New Model Police and can anyone enlighten me on the history of the American Express inscription?

Re: 1858 New Model Police
Hi Dave,
It is a New Model Police. It is the only medium frame revolver that Remington made.
Only the police and Belt Models have the screws enter from the right side.
The best bet for info on the express company is an internet search.
Good luck,
Daniel
