Looking for Help: 1858 New Model Police .36 4.5"

Post by Terrdave »

I picked up this piece earlier this week. Obviously, it's seen better days. I have not cleaned the handgun. It is as I received it. It's non-converted, hammer not locking back, and It has a missing catch at the bottom of the 4.5" barrel below the front sight. I have not opened up the side plate to inspect, but I suspect it's a main or hand spring issue. It has the inscription of "American Express Co No. 45" on the frame above the cylinder. Serial numbers match on frame and under the barrel. Is this a New Model Police and can anyone enlighten me on the history of the American Express inscription?

It would be good to post this in the ""pre 1899 handgun" section.
The loading lever catch is probably the same as on other new model single actions, so it would be available. I wouldn't think there is a side plate to remove. On a single action revolver all the parts come out through the openings by taking out the screws. I suppose your double action is a little more complicated than those.
The Express company markings make this gun more interesting, at least to me.
