remington ??

Post by bobulillo »

Hello everyone and thank you for your attention. I am writing to you from Spain, so please forgive my poor English. A few days ago I found this old pistol among my uncle's things (he died years ago) and I have no idea what I have in my hands. If you would be so kind as to tell me something about it, I would be grateful. Kind regards.

It is a Remington double derringer 41 caliber rimfire. According to a book I have they were made from 1866 to 1935. It was nickel plated originally - some of that has worn off on yours. A lot of people like them and collect them. Take good care of it and treat it gently!
Your English is just fine too!

Your Remington double derringer is the second model, manufactured from 1868 to 1888. 14,000 units of this model were produced (a total more than 150,000 units of the four models were produced).

These little pistols are much sought after by collectors.

Hi bobulillo,

Your English is fine, and it's much better than my Spanish.

What you have is a European copy of the Remington Double Derringer. Since you are in Spain, I will guess that it was made in Spain, as many of them were. It is suspected that copies were also made in Belgium, and maybe Germany.

The shape of the frame is wrong in several areas, the barrel latch (side lever) is the wrong shape, the hammer is the wrong shape, the barrel hinge is the wrong size and shape, the rib is too large, and the lettering on the barrel is a different font, and larger, plus it takes more room than the Remington marking took. The Remingtons were all in .41 rf, but some European copies were made in .38rf.

Without a proof mark it's impossible to tell what country they were made in. All European copies are unlicensed copies, thus "illegal" and why none have any maker's name or logo on them.

These copies have little value, but you could clean it up a little, (no power tools) frame it and have a nice wall decoration. If you and your uncle were close, then frame the gun with a picture of him.

Best wishes, and have a Happy New Year,
Daniel

You're entirely right Daniel. I just saw the two lines address and didn't look at the rest of the photos.

The worst thing is that I own a double derringer and what's more I have Dr. William H. Elliot's book "Remington Double Deringer". I'd slap myself as I always want to give a rapid answer without taking time to look closely to the subject !

Wow, I wouldn't have known that! Were those companies licensed in some way by Remington or just copying because they could get away with it?
Were Remington guns well known enough in Europe to make it worthwhile to copy the name? It seems like they could (should) have put their own name on it.

These unlicensed copies were in fact very numerous. Most of them were made in Spain and Mexico and perhaps other countries.

Here is one, which I'd say is Spanish, that I sold a while ago.

Thank you all very much, really. Now that I know what it is, I'll see if I can sell it, even if it's of little value.
