Remington model 760 bolt carrier spring

Hi, I have a 760 Remington made in feb.1954. The bolt carrier has no carrier spring in it. I have been told that the early ones had none. My question is when did Remington start installing them. I’m trying to figure out if the former owner had it apart and failed to put it back in or the bolt carrier never did have one. I would appreciate any information son the subject.
