Please help ID large frame RB

Post by Bobcat08 »

New to the forum. My primary interest is in vintage Rem shotguns but I did buy a RB at an estate auction recently. It was described as a NY 50/70 but since we already have one I knew this was not the case. It has the very high hammer indicative of foreign mfg, 36" bbl approx 50 cal bore with shiney shallow rifling. Full length stock sling loops etc full military presentation. Left side hammer #3, top of buttplate "F" , 36 F over 305 stamped in top of buttstock and a faint cartouche directly behind receiver left side, " RPB" base of bbl left side. Top of tang "Remingtons Ilion NY USA " over a very small line of difficult to read Pat dates. Bottom tang reads " Pat Aug 27th 1867 over Nov 7th 1871" Overall in good cond and tight action. Appreciate any clues..

Hi There,

Welcome to the forum!

I think you have a New York State militia rifle. They were 50-70
caliber. They also had a unique feature. The hammer will drop
to half-cock when the breach is closed.

It looks like the New York State cartouche on the wrist.

Cheers!

This does not have the half cock feature. I have a NY Militia 50/70 with the half cock and a eagle and springfield on the side of the receiver with "U" stamped all over it so I have something to compare it to, so I don't think so but I do appreciate your time in responding

Hi There,

There seems to be some confusion going on here.

The New York State model was made by Remington and
the Springfield model was made by the Springfield Armory
under license. There were differences internally between
the two and are not the same.

According to the pics, your rifle has the correct patent
dates on the tang and the cartouche on the wrist of the
stock looks like the New York State cartouche.

Does it have a letter "B" stamped on the barrel bands? Is
there a "B" or an "S" stamped on the left side of the barrel
near the frame?

Cheers!

There is a "B" on the bbl bands of the rifle in question and my bad it DOES have the half cock feature!..OK here are some pictures of the RB I bought as a NY militia rifle. Top tang Remington Pat 1864 and 1868 on upper tang only also with the half cock feature
