Another one to hang on the wall

Post by stanforth »

I thought I would write something as it is quite a while since something was put on this page... Here goes.

A couple of weeks ago I got the oportunity to buy 2nd type split breech rolling block. T say that they are rare here in the UK is an understanding. I have never seen one before, so I bought it. It is in reasonable condition and I am well pleased. When I get round to taking a photograph of it I will attempt yo post an mage.

Looking forward to seeing the pictures! I rarely see the split breech rifles.

Being built for such a short period before the split breech was replaced by the solid one piece block in 1868, these aren't seen often by anyone. Yours appears to be in pretty decent condition too. Does it have any ordinance marks on it still?

No. Nothing except a small letter D on the right hand side of the frame and an 'R' on the left. Thee also a 'US' stamp on the butt plate.

I can remember the days of the late, great Pomona (CA) Gun Show back in the days before CA really went off the deep end. Split breeches were numerous but not common. Back then I was too close to being a pauper to afford one.

I have a type 2 split breech too. I've shot it quite bit, it is great fun. I completely disassembled it first to inspect all the parts. It took a while to figure out how. It is completely different from later rifles. Congratulations on your acquisition.
