I have recently received a Rem model 17 20 ga. from my grandfather's estate. I am trying to date it but there is no Remington date code that I can find. On the left side of the barrel it just says 125. Is this the serial number of this gun? Also on the bottom front of the receiver it has a BO with 125 under it. I can provide pictures if that would be helpful.
Thanks for your help

Re: model 17
The serial is on the left side of the frame under the model 17, with the serial we should be able to get it to at least a year.
The Model 19 started in 1921 which is when they started date coding, was it day 1 in 1921 that I don't know so if it's really a couple digit serial it's possible it doesn't have one?
I simply haven't seen many model 17's so better answer should be forthcoming

If you are having trouble posting pictures here, you can email them to AHFCA@comcast.net and I'll post them for you. Unfortunately page 64 of the old Remington factory "Between the Wars" ledger, which should be the first page of Model 17 serial numbers, is missing. The available Model 17 serial numbers begin on page 65 at January 19, 1926, at serial number 35637, to October 6, 1933, at serial number 74020, the end of regular production. A few more Model 17s were produced between then and January 1939.

Re: model 17
A bit of research, and it appears to me that the early years of the Model 17, BO was the inventory code for them. That and the serial number was on the bottom ahead of the loading port, up into the 20000 range. At some point during the Model 17 production run the serial number was moved to the left side of the receiver under the REMINGTON logo and model number. It also appears that some have the logo etc. toward the front and lower on the left side and later it is more toward the middle of the receiver and higher.
The gun in question appears to have been severely buffed and reblued --
It appears that you have a quite early Model 17, serial number 125.

Re: model 17
Need help, I have came into a model 17 with no receiver markings. Numbers on barrel on left side show 6019 and on bottom forward section of receiver it depicts 601 and what appears to be the lower portion of the 9 but appears stamp was not properly set to press the full mark.

Your shotgun has been reblued. Heavy polishing has removed the stamped information.

Re: model 17
As Remington was spinning off excess capacity and debt after the wartime contracts of WW-I were cancelled, so they formed a new corporation in 1920, Remington Arms Co., Inc. and a couple months later the old corporation, The Remington Arms Union Metallic Cartridge Co., Inc., was dissolved. The Model 17 was introduced in the first Remington Arms Co., Inc. catalog which was late 1920/early 1921.
They must have been already working on them for a while as we see the barrels marked The Remington Arms Union Metallic Cartridge Co., Inc. into the 28xxx serial number range.
Your gun 6019 would certainly be an early one from 1920/1. Unfortunately, the first page of Model 17 production is missing from the old factory ledger. Page 2 starts with serial number 35637 as the highest serial number receiver put in work by January 19, 1926.
