Remington Beals Pocket 3rd model

Post by Patbar »

I recently acquired a Remington Beals Pocket 3rd model and I am very surprised of how little documentation about this gun I found on the web, even on this forum. How come ? These guns, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd models have a specific way of rotating and stopping the cylinder, very différent from their followers.

For example, there is nothing on this gun, even on the Forgotten Weapons channel that I appreciate very much.

Hello Patbar,
I'm very happy to see your post and I'm totally agree with you!
The Beals Third Model Pocket is one of my favorite and I believe it was also the case for Elisha..

You can find some good information for the First Model Pocket on this page, thanks to the famous Hungarian ;

https://capandball.com/remingtons-first ... del-beals/

It's very interesting to know that this model was the base for the development of the Navy Model (and how they struggled with it.. lol).
"Why they did not put the loading lever catch post, some inches backward"...?
I hope someone will understand..!?? :D

I have one question for you and for the Remington Society mMembers ;
Do you know if the 1st, 2nd & 3rd Models were numbered in the same serial number range?

Have a Good Sunday!

Hi Karu,

I don't understand the link between the Remington-Beals pocket and Elisha Root when you say that this gun was possibly one of his favorite ?

Apart from that, I saw the CapandBall page on these guns, but I'd have liked more information. There is a book written by Charles Schif titled "Remington's First Revolvers; The Remington Beals .31 Caliber Revolvers" but it is quite expensive for a small 112 pages book.

And to answer your question, I'll say that the 1st, 2nd and 3rd models were not numbered in the same serial range, as mine is # 191.

Have a nice day too !

Hi Patibulaire,
Thanks my friend for your answer on the serial number range.
I send you a pm!

For Elisha it was a kind of joke.. :D
The Similarities between the Beals 3rd Model Pocket and the "C" 1855 Root are evident..

I will try to have more informations and then I let you know.

Congrats for this beauty.... I'm not Jalous.....damn.....
See You,
Karu

Yes Karu there are similarities esthetically speaking, but the systems are quite different.

Hello Karu and Patbar,

I have the Beals book by Schif, and if you have any questions I’ll try to find the answer. If you want to collect the Beals models, this book is a necessity.

Let’s start with the first question, on locating the loading lever post closer to the cylinder on the third Model.
If the post were closer to the cylinder, the loading lever would be shorter and loading would be more difficult, plus, the cylinder pin would not be able to move far enough forward to allow the cylinder removal. Cylinder removal would be the hallmark of Remington revolvers starting with the Beals Third Model.

Serial numbers.
The Beals revolvers were batch numbered, within each model, with batches of 1,000 made, and numbered 1 to 1,000 in each batch. But, the First Model, 2nd. Issue does go to a known 1,113, and Schif has no explanation for this.

Model production.
1st Model - 4350
2nd. Model - 1000
3rd. Model 1575

Hopefully this helps.

Hello Daniel,

Thank you very much for your infos ! I hesitated buying the Schiff book because of its price, but I think I'm going to order it.

Hello There,
Many Thanks Dan!
& Yes, the Beals book is a vital neccessity :D

Could you please also, help us in the production dates?
Model production.
1st Model - 4350 (from 1856 to 1858?),
2nd. Model - 1000 (from 1858 to 1859?),
3rd. Model 1575 (from 1858 to 1860?).

Dan, my question was for the Early Beals Navy (Single Wing)
Although you have already answered to that question...
Do you think it would have been the case for the Beals Navy Single Wing?

Thanks anyway,
karu

Hello Again,

According to Shiff's book, the 1st Model Beals were made:1857 - 1859
2nd Models were made 1859-1861
3rd Models were made in 1861, when Civil War production stopped the Beals production.

Yes the loading levers on all Remingtons were as long as possible to make loading easier.

Karu, here is the photo you asked for. As you will see, the underside of the pin is flat.

Hi Patbar,
Thank you!
It's interesting to see that the cylinder pin was mounted before the lever catch post.
Ok, so the upper portion of the cylinder pin is round.
Can you please tell me, if that flat surface goes to rear end?

Thanks again,
Patbar
