1885 REM-Lee cleaning rod

Post by steveu »

Is the cleaning rod specific to the 1885 or did Remington use one from another model? I am looking for one for my 1885.

Cheers,
Steve

Hi Steve,

While I can't answer your question, I can tell you that cleaning rods aren't covered in Gene Myskowski's book on the Rem-Lee rifles. but there are a few pic of rifles with the cleaning rod.

I have a 100% complete and correct 1885 Navy rifle and the rods in Gene's book look like my rod. The rod is 31 7/16" long. Below are a couple of pic of my rod tip.

Hopefully this will help. I also suggest checking Dixie Gun Works to see if they have any.

Daniel

I believe that military (at least) Remingtons of that general period, whether bolt or roller, pretty much had the same head, but the shaft length (and perhaps diameter) would vary as required. Similar in appearance to Springfield rods, but were a two-piece design, where the SA ones were always machined in one piece.

Thanks for the replies. I was gifted the rifle and it shoots great, I hope to shoot it in a gong match this year.

Cheers,
Steve
