1894 10 gauge shot count?

Post by AZMike »

My "Big Boy" B grade 10 gauge is stamped right barrel 25, left 42. my question is what was the total shot count for the test? I wonder if it is the same as the 12 gauge--1 1/4 ounce of #8's or?

I have yet to see a hang-tag for either a 10- or 16-gauge Remington Hammerless Double. The heaviest factory offered 10-gauge shells in the days the Remington Hammerless Doubles were made was 1 1/4 ounce.

I also have an 32" 1889 10 gauge (10.4 lbs) It is marked right 42 left 50. When Rick comes out we will spend some time measuring bores and chokes and maybe reverse engineer the constrictions.
Years ago I had some sandhill cranes decoy in on our set, I was laying on my back with the 10 and cut loose on a bird that was maybe 25 yards up. I'll never recommend doing that again or even watching a bud do it for laughs! It did stop all of the crane's downward motion!

Rick and I thought we would give this a try--

10 gauge BE 1894 32" marked Right 25 Left 42
Bore- Right .789 Left .789
Choke Right .43 Left .40
Right 63% Left 66% (using 1 1/4 oz #8 = 511)

10 gauge 1889 32" marked Right 47 Left 50
Bore- Right .790 Left .790
Choke Right .45 Left .45
Right 67% Left 68% (using 1 1/4 0z #8 = 511)

It looked to us like the 1 1/4 oz of #8 shot might have been the test load

16 gauge 1889 28" marked Right 231 Left 284
Bore Right .669. Left .669
Choke Right .27. Left .25
Right 56% Left 69% (using 1 ounce #8 = 410 and Remington stamping)

16 gauge 1900 KED 28" marked Right 275 Left 278
Bore Right .668. Left .668
Choke Right .18. Left .19
By the Remington markings both chokes would be 67% using 1 ounce of #8 shot = 410 pellets
These chokes looked to have been opened up some time?

The 1 ounce #8 with 410 pellets seemed to fit better than the 1 1/4.
I had cool photos but the files are full

Researcher - are there any extant hang tags for the '89s? I assume the patterning specs would be the same as the '94s.
