Tried to educate myself using the knowledge to be found in this forum, but would love a more expert opinion on this gun
It is stamped “5982” and “38” on barrel.

Thanks for any help !

Hello,

Your rolling rifle is not a No. 1-1/2, but a Model No.2 sporting rifle. Looking at you breech block it is set up to fire rimfire cartridges. The number 5982 is the serial number and the 38 is the caliber. I don't collect this type of rifle so I don't know a lot about them. If you go the facebook and do a search for a group called #2 Remington Rolling Block Research Group, they should be able to help you out.

Have a Good Day,
Matt

The #1 1/2 is the same frame size as the #1, except thinner in width side to side. The #2 is a completely different, and physically smaller frame. It also has those lovely curved edges to the front and back of the receiver that is only found on the #2 rifles, and Rolling Block pistols.

I've been researching #2 sporting rifles for quite a while. I'm also an admin for the facebook group mentioned above.

Based on your serial number and the rifle's features, I estimate it was built in the mid-late 1870 period. 38 rimfire was a common and popular chambering. I have one very similar to yours, but a little older. I shoot it using a centerfire breech block and cartridges made from 38 Special brass. Its great fun to shoot.
