A three year project getting closer.
This 1873 Grade 3 need quite a bit of work.
The Arizona Black Walnut came from a stump that I picked up while hunting quail 25 years ago!

Whitmore Hammer Lifter re-stock
Re: Whitmore Hammer Lifter re-stock
About the same gun as mine, but I have one with the straight grip. I'm surprised you made it with a pistol grip. Did the original one come with the PG stock ? Mine needs a refinishing, but at 73 years old I just feel like shooting it and not tying it up for a couple of years. Mine has the pattern Damascus barrels that really need something to clean them up. The stock and checkering are fine - ol, a couple of scratches and nicks and dents, but nothing to get excited about. I'd just like to see the Damascus a little better. This is the third one I've owned and the first one that the stock fit me and is 12ga. Surprisingly the others were to straight - not enough DAH. This one has the old 3" DAH and those are the ones I like. And, wonder of wonders, the hammers have good lips on them where the tabs on the slide actuate them. Someone knew enough to cock the hammers with their thumb, not with the lifter. Or maybe it just wasn't shot that much, just carried in the woods a lot to mark up the stock. Anyways, it's nice to own and shoot these first edition Remington shotguns. Mine is serial# 72.
Re: Whitmore Hammer Lifter re-stock
The Hammer Lifter you have serial #72 is a early gun. The marks the gun has give it character don"t take it away refinishing it leave it be. Shoot it and have fun.
Re: Whitmore Hammer Lifter re-stock
Paul, This gun was missing butt stock and trigger guard, I used an 1889 trigger guard. We had to alter an 89 stock and bondo for a copy. I had another grade 1 lifter years ago that was also with pistol grip. Also this gun is 10 gauge but is very light.
Re: Whitmore Hammer Lifter re-stock
Remington did not offer pistol grip stock for Model 1873 in 1875 catalog.I have not seen a 1873 with original pistol grip stock.Remington listed the pistol grip stock in the 1877 Remington catalog for Model 1875 listed pistol grip stock $5.00 to $8.00 dollars extra.
Re: Whitmore Hammer Lifter re-stock
My mistake - serial # is 702, not 72. Still a early gun .

Many years ago I owned a Remington Whitmore hammer lifter grade #1 gun in 12 gauge #2072--it was a steel barrel, recessed hammer faces with a pistol grip
Semmers date chart and info would make this a $45 gun with a $5-8 pistol grip add-on.
Also, it was un-checkered.

Re: Whitmore Hammer Lifter re-stock
The one I have now is the third one I've owned. The first two had too straight a stock - not enough drop for me. I like around 3" DAH with a 14 3/4" LOP. The first one had the stock epoxied back together so I couldn't bend it. Same with the second, just glued together in the lock area. They were both the lowest grade guns. This one had a stock like I wanted, a higher grade, and it was a 12ga, not a 10. I might have paid a little high, but a gun is only worth what a man is willing to pay, and I was willing. My 73 and 94 C grade are my two favorite guns, and I'll be taking them with me when the ship goes down.

Re: Whitmore Hammer Lifter re-stock
Remington would make guns to a customer's order, for additional cost, and it was very possible that they made a pistol grip stock for a normally straight gripped gun. If they got a few orders for these stocks, they may have added the feature to their catalogs to get more orders. This is all a guess since we'll never know, but since Rem made guns to order, it is very possible,

Any chance you still have the pattern for that stock, I find myself in need of one.
