SOLVED: Remington Model 12 - Year of Manufacture & Jamming Problem

Post by GrouseHunter4932 »

SOLVED: Looks like my my issue was the cartridge retainer. I used this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxEBBkS_-2Q to install a new one which I ordered from http://www.wisnersinc.com/

Took it all apart and cleaned it and fixed the issue for $27.00

Hello everyone,

I have two questions that I would be very grateful if I could manage to have answered for me. I came across a Remington Model 12A that I obtained from a gun show about 12 years ago. This model has a special meaning to me as it was the first model of any gun that I ever shot in my life around the age of 14 or so.

Question #1 - I would love to know the exact year it was built. I’d like to state here that I indeed did do some research on this beforehand. I see something about a barrel code that could potentially be stamped into the barrel if it was made after 1921 (https://www.remingtonsociety.org/manufacture-dates/). However, I don’t see this code at all. Does that mean perhaps it was manufactured before 1921? The serial number is 589063 (Link to pic: https://ibb.co/MNXvBb1)

Question #2 - I have a jamming issue. It doesn’t seem to be with the receiver/action area, but just before the shells enter into that area via the tubular magazine. The shells get lifted up, and it is very easy to see in the two pics here (https://ibb.co/fG8rW2C and https://ibb.co/rd8Hdgc ) . Truthfully I can just loosen the end of the tubular magazine and pull the tube out some and shake it a little until the shell falls down and then reattach the tube and it works. This jam can and will happen before the first shell is even attempted to be loaded or as the first shell is loaded. Is there a part missing? Just finicky and I gotta deal with it?

I really appreciate any feedback.

Thanks and have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Excellent. It looks to have been created in late 1922. Thank you so much.

Thank you for that Den !! Hard to believe this little rifle is 92 yrs old.

Any idea where a guy might find the 2 little screws that hold the pump to the slide. I’m guessing they’ll have a shoulder on them. Someone obviously lost both the ones that came from factory and had the wrong thread pitch machine screw jammed in to hold it in place. Hopefully I can still source them. Tnx again.

Fore End screws for the Model 12 can "usually" be found on Ebay and some years back I got some from Numrich. Check Ebay first, they like those for the Model 14 are of an obsolete thread size.

Thanks Jim, I’ll take a look to see what I can find on the bay. Being up here in Canada it’s sure been next to impossible having any parts sent up from US retailers. I couldn’t even getting hammer springs for my one Perazzi trap gun, which seems a bit extreme. Any idea what thread diameter and pitch those little screws might be ?? Tnx again.

I used to know the size/pitch but just don't recall, I've sent screws and some other minor parts up north without trouble. Give it a try, they made a lot of those rifles so its a pretty common part.

I see gunpartscorp has the screws and many other parts. Any suggestions on what other parts I should order for this 112yr old ??

The owner of this 12 mentioned it wouldn’t extract casings but there’s so much gunk and dirt built up it might just need a good cleaning. The hook on the extractor is still there and I’m not sure if it’s normal but there’s definitely a taper on it, thinner at the bottom and together towards the upper portion. Wondering if I shouldn’t maybe order a new one and possibly a firing pin while I’m at it.

Well gentlemen, I have solved the problem. Looks like the cartridge retainer was indeed it! I used this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxEBBkS_-2Q to install a new one which I ordered from http://www.wisnersinc.com/

I would highly recommend the video I linked to. There are a few others on youtube that show a guy using a punch and hammer to lodge the cartridge retainer into place. Very unnecessary.

Took it all apart and cleaned it and fixed the issue for $27.00 :D
