Need help dating RB

Post by Hman »

I have a rolling block that is in poor condition but has been in the family for years. The history has been lost as to its origin and I am trying to date this to help with the time frame. This is what i can share:

3 bands held in place by barrel band springs - crown on the bands
rear sling swivel on a separate piece in the buttstock - steel butt plate

#G74308 on left side of upper tang and on the left side of trigger guard (covered by stock) From what I have read this is not a SN as I initially thought.

On top of tang only partly readable: REMINGTONS ILION, N. Y. U. S. A.
Readable patent months only:May7, June11, Nov12, dec??- no year visable

Barrel is round 35in long and approx 50cal
Center fire cartridges

Is this a military model purchased by the New York Militia?

Need to order parts and would like to know model and what approx year. I have a picture of this model but i am not sure how to post am image

Thanks in advance

Regards Howard

ID of your rifle

Your military model is likely one of the standard type for foreign export. They were commonly made in .50-70 Govt. center fire. The 35 inch barrel is also the standard length. If the patent markings on the top tang are two line, the rifle was likely made before 1871. If the markings are 3 line, then it could have been made into the 1890s.

The New York model has two significant features: a longer 36 inch barrel (muzzle to the end of the chamber) and a half cock feature. When the breech is opened and then closed, the hammer automatically drops into a half cock or safety position.

Thanks for responding with the information on my RB. It is 35in not the 36in long version. As you indicated it does have the half cock feature. There are 3 lines on the tang the top line says Remington Illium NY USA the next two lines show the patent dates. Is there any other way to get a more definate manufacture date. Is there any other information that would help with dating this. What year did they begin with the half stop feature?
It could have been made up to the 1890s starting from when?

do you know where I can get parts for this?

Thanks again!

Halfcock?

Post by ehull »

Your response about the halfcock feature confuses me. On the New York Model, as well as on the Springfield M1871 (dated 1872 on the frame side) when the breech block is snapped closed after loading the hammer AUTOMATICALLY falls to half cock. I am not aware of this feature on any other Remington model, though every Remington model does have a half cock position of the hammer (which the user must set).

There is one other feature (other than the date of the last patent in the tang marking) that helps date the rifle: if the frame at the buttstock joint is merely a square corner then it was made 1867 - 1880. If the frame has a "rabbit" or an edge that overlaps the buttstock to better hold it in place, then it is likely post 1880.

As to parts, check oout some of the other questions on this site (I think there was an answer in another query) or just post a specific, new question again.
