Hi anyone who can tell me when this rifle is manufactured? E. Remington & sons or Remington Arms Company?

I'm not sure what that is, but I don't think it's a Remington at all.

Hello Eskil,

Remington made the sporting rifle up to about 1894. The rifle would of been made by the Remington Arms Company. The barrel maybe marked E. Remington & Sons or Remington Arms Company. In Roy Marcot book Remington Rolling Block Rifles, Carbines & Shotguns Sporting & Target Rifles, he said that about 300 rifles were made after 1888. Most of the rifles were made up from old stock. Attached is a photo of my 2 sporting rifles, one is a early manufacturing and one is late. Hope that helps you out some.

And neither match that frame, I've not seen a frame like that.
Well I think I have but where (I'm not a rolling block expert AT ALL)

I am not familiar with that frame either but I am with the six line seven date patent address. According to the book "Remington Rolling Block Pistols" by Jerry Landskron it was used on some Army framed 1887 target pistols which were made from 1887 until 1891 and some 1891 Army framed target pistols which were made from 1891 until 1900. He also stated in chapter nineteen that the seven date patent address was used on some Remington number 1 and number 2 rolling block rifles.

Looks like the later model Remington #1 sporting rifle frame to me. Matches a few that I own.

Hi everyone. Thanks for the replies. Really appreciate it.
This rolling block things are new to me. I'm more of a revolver kind of guy.
I was offered this in my home country Norway and they are quite rare over here so not many experts to ask for advice.

Oldremguy: Looks similar to the late version, thanks for photo.

Jim: Can I ask what serial number range your rifles (the matching ones) are in? And do they have the same patent dates?

Thanks a lot

Hello Eskil,

The early Remington sporting rifles were made with the receivers that were used on their military rolling block rifles. The 2-line patent dates were stamped on the top of the upper tang. Here is a photo of the patent dates on my early sporting rifle.

The 2-line patent date was used to about serial number 3131.

Beginning with serial number 1358, the top tangs were unmarked and the 6-line patent dated were stamped on the left side of the receivers. Here is a photo of my late model sporting rifle showing the same patent dates as found on your rifle.

Eskil, The four Remington #1 sporting rifles I own right now are serial numbered between 51xx and 99xx, all have the same patent dates as yours. Here is a pic of serial #71xx, a 40-70 bn. Notice the large rebate milled into the receiver side at top compared to Matt's pic with the smaller milled rebate. Remington made this change around serial #7400.

I always enjoy Matt's comments and pics of his Remingtons.

Hey Jim,
I have a number 1 sporting rifle chambered in 44 RF with serial number 51xx that has the same frame and patent dates as yours which is serial numbered 71xx. I guess with Remington one never knows.

Well then I became a proud owner of a RB Sporting model no 1 😁. Barrel is replaced with a barrel from Smith&Wesson. Did not know they made rifle barrels.
