What model is this ??

Post by kwells »

Could someone tell me what we have (my father actually).

It is a double barrel shotgun which he says is so old it didn't even have a model number (the first model made by Remington according to him, approx 1860's). Serial number on each and every part is "67". Has what he called "high hammers" (but one is missing). He also said it had a Damascus twist barrel, but that doesn't make sense. The term "Damascus", from what I know, means the outside of the barrel is engraved with a pattern (this one doesn't have that). I saw in another post/thread that Jay H mentioned a Model 1886 double barrel. This one DOES have a center lever (it lifts) that is used to break it open.

If anyone knows what model this is, I'd appreciate the info. Thanks. Oh, and I have pix of it if those would be helpful. Would just need to know where to send them.

Kent I think you have an 1874 Lifter Whitmore Model Double Gun. Please send me the picture and I will go from there! Jay Huber RSA Email huber7774@bellsouth.net

Jay, thanks for the help. It's been identified by the expert as (almost certain, but we'll still say "most likely") an 1873 Whitmore Lifter with true Damascus Twist barrels. Does anyone know of the existence of a specific gun of this model/line that is older/produced earlier ?? It sure would be neat to know we have THE oldest one if that is the case.
