Old 700 Carbine?
Old 700 Carbine?
I have a 700 Remington manufactured in August of 1967. Has the “stainless steel” stamping on barrel. The barell only measures somewhere approximately 18” long. It looks like a factory cut and crown. This rifle was a tack driver with the old Winchester 140gr Silvertips. Does anyone know if Remington made this rifle with a barrel this short or was it done after the fact? Ive had this rifle about 27 years and have never seen another one like it.
Re: Old 700 Carbine?
I have never seen or heared of a 700 with an 18 " barrel, other than yours.
The Blue Book lists 700 Carbines as being made with 20" barrels in 1962 & '63.
I would say it's a custom barrel, done by Remington or someone else.
Are there more than one set of date codes on the barrel?

Blued barrel? They did make short target barrels but they were bright SS

From the bullet weight, it sounds like a .264 Win Mag.
From my experience, the stainless steel barrels were only used on standard Model 700 rifles (ADL & BDL) in the magnum calibers in the 1960s. And, in those years, the magnum calibers had 24" barrels.
I've never seen or heard of any magnum barrels shorter than that in those years.
If the above is true, I'd say it had been cut down at some point.
Was it drilled and tapped for a front sight......or does it have one attached? That would be another potential clue to look for.
Unlikely that it came from the factory that way.

Re: Old 700 Carbine?
Sorry, should have stated this is a 7MM Mag. Factory front sight is there
Re: Old 700 Carbine?
Pics? Would help. Especially the barrel makings and the area around the calibre
Re: Old 700 Carbine?
Not sure if pics will turn out. Under the 7MM Mag it says “stainless steel” No other markings near there except the standard Remington designation and I believe they are patent numbers. Near receiver on left side is 9WP and then right next to receiver is B. On bolt side near receiver is R in a sideways triangle followed by R.E.P. in a rectangle followed by a star.

Re: Old 700 Carbine?
One more of the muzzle! That may tell a story
Re: Old 700 Carbine?
Had hard time getting it to focus. Best I could do.

Re: Old 700 Carbine?
Well, it is an oddity. Sure looks factory. The bluing would be next to impossible to match at the muzzle if cut due to the process used. Comparing the serial number to the date of assembly may lead me to believe that someone in the factory had this "custom" assembled for themselves. They are about 2 months out of sequence, which, on its own is not out of character, but in thus case I believe my thought could be correct. Not sure I'd want a 7mag with that short of barrel but someone mite.
Re: Old 700 Carbine?
Thanks for the input. Either way, I paid $125.00 for it when I bought it with an old steel weaver scope on it and like I said, it shoots a 1 ragged hole group at 100yds.
Re: Old 700 Carbine?
As long as it shoots good and you got a great deal on it, that's what counts. But, I'm still of the opinion that it didn't leave the factory that way. It's just hard to image putting that short of a barrel on a "standard" magnum rifle of that caliber. Yeah, the short-barreled 600 series came in 6.5 and 350 magnum calibers, but they were also based on shorter length cartridges......not full length ones.
One possibility is that something happened to the end of the barrel somewhere back in time and they decided this was a way to salvage it. Or, if it was going to be used for backpacking or horseback hunting in the mountains, the previous owner may have had a good gunsmith "customize" it that way to lighten it up a bit. Who knows? Only the previous owner who had it during that time.
Good luck with it and if you ever find the real story behind it, come back and let us know.

Re: Old 700 Carbine?
Whether or not it was manfactured that way, (I agree I dont think it left Remington like that) it is a great shooting rifle. Because the workmanship on the cut/crown and blue were so good, and gun company’s did some strange things back then, it was worth asking about. Thanks again.
