1890 revolver

Post by lnh98 »

Found what I believe to be a 1890 revolver in my late dad's things. Has 542 on the frame under the missing left grip and 542 on the trigger guard tang. It has 207 on the underside of the barrel and E.Remington&sons illion NY USA on the top. The front of the frame has 207 stamped on it. Any idea as to the year? Missing grips and has a broken hammer. Would like to find a source for parts or possibly a restoration company. Thanks... Mike.

Hello Mike,
If your revolver has a short barrel and an 1890 style rib I believe you have a Model 1888. The number 542 is the serial number and the 207 is an assembly number. The barrel address on an 1888 is the same as the 1875 barrel address which is what you revolver has. There are no assembly numbers on an 1890 and the barrel address on an 1890 is “REMINGTON ARMS CO. ILION. NY.” The 1890 will also have the following, “44 C.F.W.” stamped on the left frame under the cylinder. Both revolvers were chambered in 44-40 caliber and have the 1890 style web under the barrel. An 1890 will have black checkered grips with the RA monogram at the top of the grips while the grips on an 1888 are usually made of wood. The 1888 is a much rarer revolver than the 1890. Factory records indicate there were 2020 model 1890’s manufactured. Flayderman’s Guide to American Firearms estimates there were less than one thousand 1888’s made. The 1888 was made in 1888 and 1889. The 1888 uses the same parts as the 1875 so getting pair of grips and a 1875 hammer should not be impossible. I would be very careful about restoring the revolver unless it is a bucket of rust. It will significantly decrease its value.

Thanks Bill. The barrel measures 5 3/4", has a blade sight of a silvery material and a rather beat up muzzle crown. Gun is missing the rib and has no finish but no pits either. Frame has a small lump of weld on the left side about midway in front of the cylinder opening. I'm not determined to have it restored but would like to have it functional. Again, thanks much for the information... Mike.

Hi Inh98,

Can you please post some pic of the gun?

To add to Bill T's excellent info, the RSA's two leading researchers on the 1888 estimate that less than 350 of them were made. This is mainly based on the assembly numbers, which were sequential, and not batch numbers which the serial numbers may to be.

I am new to this forum. I restore these old gems. I have over the last ten years restored over twenty of these Remy 1875 and 1890's. I have seen it all. I see that you also need a new main spring. I have a lead and also need to recreate the parts that you need.

I bought a lot of Uberti 1890 reproduction revolver parts, but not the crossbolt safety hammer. I'm still looking for a 1875 hammer and a 1875 underlug for the barrel with little to no finish to match the rest of the gun. I understand there were hammer variations but just want to make this functional and I also just like the look of the 1875 underlug.
