I have an 1853 dated example of the M 1841. Unfortunately someone sanded the stock and aggressively cleaned up the barrel. The barrel is bright and I’m wondering whether or not the original was blued/browned.
Everything I’ve read indicates that all M1841s, even contract rifles, were browned and I have never seen any reference to those barrels being left in the white.
I would appreciate any comments on this.
Thank you!!

As made originally, the barrels were browned. If yours was later altered to use a saber bayonet or socket bayonet, it is possible that the browning was removed because the current 1861 fashion was bright metal,

Re: Remington contract M1841 rifle
Thank you for the reply. This gun has no lug, no tooling and retains the original brass front sight, so I don’t think it was modified. It might have been recently filed, ground and polished by a careless reenactor or a kid in an effort to remove pitting. Regardless, I like it because it is a Remington so I’ll rust blue it in an effort to restore some of its dignity.
Let me know if you agree about the bayonet mod.
Thanks again.

A photo of the muzzle area would help a lot.
