Im a new member, thanks to all for providing a chance to enjoy the remingtons with fellow collectors.
I have a Remington Pre-model 11 12ga shotgun, serial #127049. 28" matted vent rib. it is marked on the top tang "remington". Barrel address has "Remington arms -union metallic cartridge co,remington works ny usa " has no "model 11" markings.
The Remington Autoloader (pre-11) according to the Remington book by Marcot was manufactured from 1905-10. They came out with the model 11 in 1911. UMC merged with remington in 1912. They made 277,000
of these pre-11 shotguns.
I want to confirm that this was made in 1912. has the umc markings which would be correct for 1912. The Model 11 came out in 1911.
Why not marked "model 11"?
What date did the model 11 start production?
Were the serial numbers continuous throughout prodution of the Pre-11, model 11, sportsman, and american brownings, or did they all have seperate production # series.
Thank You, Bill

A Couple of Thoughts
Remington Arms Co. only offered plain, matted, and matted rib barrels on their Autoloading Shotgun. Vent ribs began being offered after the joining of Remington and UMC. A guess would be that your gun got a new barrel after the introduction of vent ribs?!? Or, maybe your gun was already in work at the time of the joining of Rem-UMC. These were companies that were in the business of getting product out the door, and weren't really concerned about what collectors will be pondering 95 years later!!!
I don't think Remington Arms Co. made anywhere near 277,000 Autoloading Guns. The serial numbers for 12-gauge guns just broke 200000 in September/October 1919.

Thank you for sharing,it is very helpful.
Is the Matted Rib a solid rib-with matting on the top surface. maybe Im using the wrong terminology. This one for sure has vents, sets lower than reciever. ( the ribs alternate from side to side ). it is matted on the top surface. The serial numbers on the barrel and reciever match. looks like they have been together since it was made, same finish wear. The matting apears to match on the barrel and reciever. maybe this is a Matted Rib barrel.
Did they start marking the recievers and barrels "model 11" in 1912?
Did the Model 11 start with it own set of serial#?
Was it correct that this one was made in 1912?
Do we know what the last serial # is for the Remington Autoloader?
Thank You, Bill

There was a wonderful history of the Remington Autoloading Gun/Model 11/Sportsman in the history section of the Remington on-line magazine on their web site for a couple of years. I thought I saved out a copy, but I sure can't find it, and it is gone from their magazine now. I spoke to our web master at Las Vegas last winter about possibly finding it and adding it to the site, but I've heard no more about it.
