1913 model 11 as a "military weapon?"

Post by WayneC »

I recently was given a model 11-A which had been owned by my father-in-law's grandfather. It is a 12 gauge, full choke with the solid rib. It is in either exceptionally fine original condition or has been refinished. The bluing is generally bright with some minor discolorations, and the wood to metal fit appears original with very little wear. It has a rubber whiteline recoil pad instead of a solid butt plate. Receiver and barrel numbers match. I called Rem. with the serial # and they told me that it was manufactured in 1913 and was " a military weapon." I found this last surprising as there were no ordinance marks or cartouches that I could see. I had thought their only military use had been as aerial-target training weapons during WWII, and that only Winchester model 97's had been used as trench- or riot guns during WWI. Does anyone have any info. about the model 11 being used by the military prior to WWI? Also, how could I tell whether or not this gun had been refinished? Assuming it has been refinished, what is the ballpark value for a gun like this?
