Pellet count

Post by dieNusse1 »

I'm a bit confused which is fairly normal. I have an Ithaca 10 ga (#3771) hang tag that uses 4 drams FG and 498 pellets of Tatham & Bros. #8 shot to make a pattern test load of 1 1/4 oz. The information I've seen for Remington hang tags is 511 pellets for a 1 1/4 oz load. The question is whether there were differences in pellet size between different shot makers?

For anyone interested - left barrel shows 319 (64%) and the right 301 (60%) in a 24" circle at 35yards.

Absolutely. There was considerable difference between the various shot towers across the country, and also a difference between soft shot and chilled shot. This chart is from the 1897 to 1899 L.C. Smith catalogues --

I believe most guns were patterned at 40yds with a 30" circle - don't know how that compares to a 24" circle at 35yds.

I don't know how they would relate either -- just relaying what the hang tag states. I would think the results would be similar but?????
