What is Philadelphia?

Post by 2bnag »

I have a remington Lee, not sure if it is a model 1882 or an 1885, and it has the word PHILADELPHIA stamped into the top (comb) of the buttstock in letters that are a little over 1/8 inch high, and the word PHILADELPHIA is about 3 1/2 inches long. Does anyone have any idea what this might refer to?

The rifle is serial numbered 50197 and USN 1280. Could this have been a rifle issued to the USS Philadelphia?

That would be my thought.

According to Gene Myszkowski's book, the first issue of M1885 rifles, with Navy numbers starting at 1001, was to the USS Philadelphia, a protected cruiser commissioned in 1889.

My own M1885 is one of the 280 issued to the California Naval Battalion.
