Remington New Model Army serial 1405xx: date and inspector?

Post by Lars »

Hi to All, congratulations to all contributors. This is my first post... I recently fell in love with the Remington 1858 and had the opportunity to get a nice one (although missing most of its original finish) here in Paris, France. My first question is the most usual: could anybody help me to know the production date? (serial number under the barrel and under the left grip: 140596). Second: does anybody know who's inspector is the mark in the cartouche on the left grip? I did not find it so far.
Thank you very much!
Lars :D

Hello Lars,
Welcome to the forum. Your revolver was manufactured in February of 1865. According to Donald Ware's book "Remington Army and Navy Revolvers 1861-1888" the RPB sub inspector remains unidentified. It has been incorrectly identified as Robert P Barry, an Ordinance Department during the Civil Way. One other Armory sub inspector with the RPB cartouche was Robert P Beales who inspected from 1862 to 1879 but I do not know if he inspected Remington Revolvers.

Regards,

Bill
