I too have a very early model (3 digit serial, which were batch numbers) And if you look very closely at the cartouche on the left grip you may find the caliber markings. These early guns had .44 in the cartouche..Later models had the cal markings stamped on the frame, between the cyl and barrel, then on the trigger guard...Jim

Raid; I first thought my piece was a .44 Rem, because of the low serial number. Howerer, it has the .44 on the grip and does chamber the 44-40, and we know that for some reason they batched the serial numbers..Mine appears to have been made early, just after the sequencial numbered guns. Of course, no gov inspection is present..Sorry, I was no help in your quest....Jim
